John the Baptist, by Polish painter and sculptor Igor Mitoraj (b.1946), of Carrara marble in 2006. It’s at the Basilica of Sta. Maria Degli Angeli e dei Martiri at the Piazza della Repubblica in Rome, Italy. Taken Oct. 7, 2015. Nikon D7100. Rokinon 8mm f/3.5 fisheye. 1/80th sec. F/3.5. 8mm (DX 12mm). ISO 1600. RAW. The bust is more serene than other post mortem depictions of the Baptist that I can recall, as if he’s saying, “Mission accomplished.” The church now is a memorial to Italian war dead. It was Michelangelo’s last big architectural feat, carved from the ruins of the frigidarium (cold baths) of the ancient Roman Baths of Diocletian. A quiet, lovely, untouristed gem.
